What does a novice need to know?

I don't think you're going to find something 4WD/AWD that fits inside of 14ft. On the other hand, I think you'll find that a Mini-Cooper with ABS and (when necessary chains) will be able to cope with most things. And it's quite safe despite it's size - it's really made by BMW. As a small...

    Radial Aircraft Engine Cutaway pictures.

Broadly similar to a Harley Davidson, just more of it. Common crankpin design...and dates to about the same era.

What does a novice need to know?

Looking at the two Becks units, the 12ft garage model is OK for motorcycles/ATVs/golf carts, maybe a few cars...Honda CRX maybe. Or the Mini Cooper. The 14ft garage is more usable but you're still talking about a pretty small car and not that particular Saturn mentioned. Note that these are...

What does a novice need to know?

Maybe I can help put this in context. My rig is an oddball: a very early truck conversion (1988) based on a commercial chassis all right...a Ford F450 of all things. Despite this "lowly" underpinning it's built like a truck conversion vs. RV, 2" square steel tube frame, riveted aluminum skin...

    Bruck vs Truck

I investigated using a 35ft Postal Crown. Postals have a lot going for them. Driveline is compatible with Crown skoolies so parts supplies are VERY good, better than something like a GMC bus of the 50s/60s/70s. The frame on a Crown tandem 40ft skoolie is deliberately weakened behind the rear...

Why is this trucks wheel base so long?

As near as I can figure, the trend in "show trucks" (which is a bizarre enough idea!) is that since stretching a frame "cleanly" (zero-visibility welds, etc.) is difficult, they do it to show off their fabricating skills. It would also make the thing more stable when not towing anything and...

    Automatic Generator start

Best prices I've seen on Outback gear: http://thesolar.biz/OutBack%20Inverters.htm Outback's site: http://www.outbackpower.com/ The forums are a gold mine...their own employees generally answer.

    Automatic Generator start

Outback is supposed to be working on a really neat feature for the FX/VFX series that's already on the "Grid Tie" inverters: "generator support". Basically...you run the generator but if any loads need more than the gennie can do, the inverter will make up the difference. This is a killer...

    Slide outs

Why not do a "slide back" - something that extends the back end eight feet or so when deployed? It's practical with these front-engine rigs. You could have a main bed that extends backwards out from under a pair of side-by-side bunks or something...

    build quality

Wick, I agree that your rig with a new cab and slideouts was worth $160. I remain convinced though that a good used cab professionally inspected and deleting the slideouts can net a damned fine rig in the $100k range or a hair over - and hold it's value even better than 89%.

    build quality

If you don't do slideouts, you can get a nice new rig in the $100-$125k range built on a good condition used cab/frame/drivetrain. My opinion is that slideouts stink. They reduce overall reliability (weaker frame) and introduce their own multiple "points of failure". Another point: some...

Remember "Walker Coach"? He's been arrested...

I've had to face down censorship myself: http://www.equalccw.com/liebold.html Beat 'em though. In that case I dared 'em to sue me and they backed down; I then sued them to get the state of California a refund on the bad voting gear they peddle. The state attorney general limited the suit to...

Remember "Walker Coach"? He's been arrested...

Kaye, can you post some links? I've seen a few such discussions and long ago came to the conclusion that the mainstream RV industry was studded with crap product...not just "fly by nighters", the biggest like Winnabago and such. My rig is being "expanded" right now by a very honest RV repair...

Remember "Walker Coach"? He's been arrested...

I know, it's one of the best bus conversion shop websites out there. Amazing. There's two big busnut forums out there, the last link above is the bigger. It's run out of Canada and the moderator is understandably wary about getting sued (weaker "free speech laws" up there). So the earliest...

    International MDT conversion for sale

Wait: I'm not saying they can't tow! I'm saying that once you build one into an entire 35ft+ motorhome, THEN you don't have as much leftover towing capacity as if you'd started with a class8 . In my case, I've got about a 28ft motorhome body (not including cabover bed) on a Ford F450 Super...

    International MDT conversion for sale

Why not? Except for no towing capacity to speak of, mine does fine @ 16,000lb with a Ford F450 cab, 460EFI gasser with a 5sp! MDT diesel would do great, so long as the trailer is kept down in the 6,000 - 8,000lb range versus the multi-car monster stackers the full Class8s can cope with.

Cited today by the Sheriffs Dept for "Dog Poop"

The whole problem of police misconduct is eventually going to be solved by dirt cheap hidden cameras/microphones worn on-body that can record eight hours plus on a battery charge. When enough people get fed up and start protesting in court with the video of what REALLY happened, things will...

Cited today by the Sheriffs Dept for "Dog Poop"

Most people have NO idea how much police misconduct and corruption goes on. Problem is, it starts at the very top. I see it all the time in one particular aspect of police "services" in California: specialty gun permits that are at the sole discretion of police chiefs and sheriffs...

    1996 conversion on a 1987 Kenworth.

For the price, that's a bitchin' rig. Racingjunk consistently has killer deals, that's where I found my critter. While weird, I can see one advantage to that roofline: on most rigs, the A/C units, TV antennaes, vents and other "utility stuff" form the highest points of the roofline. Had he...

    2nd Annual Class 7/8 Rally

Search doesn't work on this forum. Information goes into a black hole. At one point somebody posted a link to the supplier of doors for Showhauler and other high-end converters, a link I desperately need to find again. Search is down and when I posted a query for the link in the general forum...

    Urgent: need vendor of doors/ramps!

Folks, Somebody around here posted a link in one of the threads to the same maker of RV doors and ramps that Showhauler and the like uses. The website in turn was very plain and simple but I need to find that site again, BAD. And the search function is down. Can somebody help out? Jim

    Coach Cage Frame construction

Whatever Hansen did, they did right. This was apparantly among their first conversions. They did a total of 50 in Sacramento from '88 to '98. Most of the later ones were on GMC Topkicks and a few other MDTs. Pics (but note that it's getting the whole back enclosed and a ramp door added as a...

    Coach Cage Frame construction

Ehhh...what exactly is wrong with rivets? Mine was factory made in '88, riveted aluminum skin, tube steel frame. Still holding tight as hell, original paint still looks OK...couple of minor chips and scrapes, a couple loose rivets (easily fixed) down in the galvanized steel lower bay area but...
