Side view mirror

I installed a sat radio antennae on the drivers side mirror. The antennae seems to be carbon fiber and not very flexible. In one of my finer moves while backing out of my drive way, caught the antennae on a tree branch, and rather than bend it broke the top of the mount inside the mirror. I need a new mirror assemlbe I think.

Now since I don't want to take out a second mortgage on my house and get a new one from Volvo I wanted to try a salvage yard. Are there any on line that I could contact. I haven't found one up here in the twin cities of Mn sure there are some just haven't looked hard enough.

How much of a project am I in for?

I agree -- Volvo is not only expensive -- their return/restocking fee -- Well .. I won't go there -- It's to painful !!

Oldphoneman thanks for the reply and geoff I am glad to see another one on this post to figure out that if God wanted us to have clean trucks he wouldn't have invented dirt!

Dave thanks for the links, and I have the Delphi and have it hooked directly into the radio. It is moveable and going coast to coast is great, they had 66 hours of Bruce Springsteen over the weekend, how good is that!

And I see -- If I opt for a multi year contract -- there is an additional savings !!

I like the idea -- I can move the receiver from Tractor/House/5th wheel and only one subscription. That was my hangup when I thought about this last summer.

Forgot -- To comment about the mirror. You'll need Metric tools --

I had the driver's side apart last winter when I installed a Dual-Band Amateur antenna. Not really much to um -- It's that the components are large -- and there is a motor that operates the flat mirror. Shouldn't be any problem mechanically -- Just finding the parts reasonably -- That's the challenge !!

If you broke the assembly as you described, you can go to any C/B shop and buy that assembly cheap. I have done this type of replacement several times.

Just unscrew the cable running up inside your mirror from the bottom of the fitting where it mounts on the bracket. Take the fitting off the bracket and take it with you to make certain you get the right parts.
If you broke the bracket itself, there are ways to attach another different type of bracket too, ask at the CB shop.

Just a note on the XM - Sony has a nice little receiver that is portable as well... The Delphis is nice and I think cheaper but possibly not since they come with different pieces in the base package. I just liked the Sony's looks better.

Sean -- for my tired old eyes -- I need things BIG !!

But -- what really came to light -- as I read a thread last weekend on XM was -- Delphi is using a new chip set that runs cooler and unlike the Sony product -- has no cooling fan. Hence no noise.

I'm taking a few days off of work this weekend -- and taking Ol Red to Portalnd -- As I want to see what the market has available for XM.

Chuck -- How goes the mirror housing replacement ??

Chuck: If you broke the part I'm thinking you broke, you will have to replace the all the mirror mounts inside the mirror holder. I've broke one of mine also by hitting a tree limb and it will a project to replace it. They don't make pot metal like they used to. Got wire ties holding it together for now.

Chuck and Jim,

There are other "off the shelf" brackets that can be mounted inside the mirror housing. I have done this a couple of times. You may need to drill a couple of mounting holes in the pot metal.

When finished and the back mirror cover is back on, no one can tell the difference.

There are also brackets that mount on the top mirror arm. The CB cable inside the mirror is long enough to reach above the mirror to the new outside bracket if you stretch it out.
