I am using aluminum angle trim to trim out the exterior of my box. I have a 1 piece aluminum roof that does NOT fold down over the sides of the box. I was wondering the best type of sealant to use for this lap type joint of trim to roof. I have thought of 100% silicone, but it's adhesive properties would make it impossible to remove the trim(without destroying it) if I had too for some reason in the future. Also, would it be neccesary to put the sealant under the trim or would just placing it at the edge where the trim and the roof metal meet be ok? Any help appreciated. Thanks.

I used butyl on the recommendation of many, but I have discovered a new leak this week. Its probably a new leak, instead of bad material. Leaks are a pain to hunt down, especially after you have the interior walls installed.

Hawk used a 4" wide sealant tape (on our conversion) to cover the laps on top (which can't be seen from the ground).
I don't remember the name of the stuff but it conforms to lumps, bumps and irregularities.
It sticks fast, & apparently seals tight - 3 years & no problems. I think it's in the same line as the 3-M VHB used to bond the outer skin to the structure - only better.

....silicone only works if the roof doesn't move....vibration and heat/cold will cause it to loose seal as will dust/water.....use a single part epoxy if you have the money and a butyl if you don't.....may cost $8.00 a tube retail and $4.50 wholesale pricing in case lots....will take 12 tubes and don't tighten the trim to the aluminum too tight or it will creep out leave at least 1/16 of an inch for the sealer.....like a gasket so to speak.....clean all surfaces with Denatured alcohol - not cheap Scotch it leaves a residue.....geofkaye

....if you got a rubber roof there is a solution an at any roofing store and it works very well....BUT use gasoline to clean the rubber before you glue it or it will lift.....the cleaner doesn't work that well and cost an arm and a leg so to speak.......

...not sure what you mean by butyl route.....sheet or patch or complete cover?....LMK geofkaye
