Is there a "best" layout for a bathroom, ie shower, sink, toilet...?

Seems like I see a lot of variation in the bathroom layouts.

Is there a best design to this?

I would think that if you have the toilet and sink on one side, the shower on the other side, with a walkway and doors seperating the two sides, if you have a rear bedroom, then one person could be showering while somebody eles is using the toilet and washing their hands afterwards.

Where as if it was one big room with the shower, toilet and sink all contained in one room, only one person could be inside, if they wanted privacy.

Any comments on best layouts for bathroom and shower design?

Layout of a bathroom is partially dependent on waste water tank configuration. Mine run side-to-side with the deep end of the sump on the driver's side. I therefore put the toilet on the driver's side (over the deep end of the sump), with the shower adjacent to the toilet.
The vanity & a linen closet are on the passenger side. The bathroom has pocket doors front and rear so someone in the bedroom can have access (and privicy) or with the rear door closed, it can be used by someone bunking in the front.
