It gets even wilder if you're in California or another Socialistic state.

You buy a basic tractor rig here in-state for $15k and spend $20k on basic upgrades/rebuilds (suspension, tranny, engine if needed). You pay the yearly "road tax" only based on the initial purchase price of $15k - that's 2% of $15k - $300. Register it as a motorhome in-state.

Or you get a GOOD rig, needs nothing, $40k or so like those Volvos wazzizname here on the forum sets up. Fine. $800ish a year ain't TOO crazy.

Send the critter to Showhauler or similar 33ft garage motorhome chassis runs about $125k or so (flexible with various options).

If you started with the basic $15k unit, back in Calif you'll only pay $300 a year to keep it on the road.

Buy the WHOLE thing from Showhauler, with brand-new tractor, etc. at $200k, you'll be paying California DMV $4000 a year for the rest of your life!

Holy crap. That's on TOP of this Federal tax issue.

Solution: whatever you do, get a rig in California that's got a sleeper. Register it as a motorhome, THEN send it out-of-state for "improvements" (big, BIG improvements!).

%#$^#$#$&% gubbermint!

There have been many cases where the "dealer" AKA "stealer" has collected taxes and has not returned them even though they have NOT been due.....Don't take the word of the dealer on a new purchase ask the IRS for the ruling in writing at your local IRS office....Buyer be aware.....I had a local VW dealer try to add FET tax on a retitled vehicle-when confronted he outright lied about the tax and refused to return the money-which is a federal offence.....guess who turned him in to the State and the IRS for tax fraud.....geof....{one down and many to go!} Cowboy Cadillac is not the best source of financial/tax information......

Oh and by the way -their NADA sales pitch is a line of crap....and they know it. Buyer be aware....geof

We found out that the FET issue is real! We contacted the IRS after reading the info on Cowboy Cadillac. We had several dealers making false claims to us! Sport Chassis,Western Hauler and more! Cowboy Cadillac is only company posting the information!

Note, on buying the chassis and then putting the hitch on. The window is 6 months. The FET applies to the truck and everything added in the first 6 months after the retail sale.

This relates to any tractor and any truck over 33,000 GVW.

So if you plan to skirt the IRS, plan on owning a truck without a hitch for at least 6 months.

.....here In Ohio there is an outstanding debt from in and out of state dealers to the State of Ohio in the millions currently....also if they can't get the dealer/seller- you had better be prepaired to prove you paid the taxes due or they seize your asset......buying a tractor/trailer/whatever out of state in no way lets you off the hook in anyway-check with Federal-state-and locals before you think you are missing a few percent by an out of state purchase....."BUYER-BE-AWARE".....don't quote me an an referance-get it in writing from all three officials-laws vary between states on the tax issues.....but all in all "you will pay in the end"....said Betty Montgomery Ohio Attorney General......geofkaye
