Exhaust pipes up or down. What's the difference?

I'm curious about the different ways big trucks run their exhaust pipes.

Some run them up and some run them down.

Can anyone explain the difference between the two versions? Cost, function...?

I have both and I perfer them up so as to get rid of the diesel fumes in the A.M. during warm up....when I use my wrecker in very cold weather with the "weed burner" muffler the fumes can get rather sensational when moving a disabled car up on the deck slowly....geof

Depends on what you have room for. If you are running a bunk over the cab, then you'll mostly likely run it out the drivers side on ground level. If you are running a condo version which was designed for a stack or you can make room for a stack and that is what you like run it up. I have no problems with the ground level exhaust, only time I can hear is under a over pass or along side a concrete barrier.

another consideration is where your waste tanks are. mine are turned up on edge and are between the frame and the drive shaft. i really like the extra room this arrangement gives me--- it does preclude the use of a horizontal pipe, unless you are willing to pull the exhaust when you need to service the drive shaft. oh-- does/is anyone else use this setup?(the tanks)--- mase
