32' box w/single axle?

I'm concidering an '04 32' Haulmark on a Columbia single rear axle chassis. I,m not looking to haul big trailers, maybe up to 15K car hauler. Is the single axle a mistake?

I think you will be pushing the limits of your stopping abilities with a single axle.

I have to agree with Wick. Rule of thumb for us (for single drive axle) is 28' max when hauling a trailer over 10K. It's an exact science if you are willing to do the math. CVGW, and GVW and so on. Good luck.

Is there a similar rule of thumb for garage conversions? I'm still in wishing/planning stages but will want to haul a Mini Cooper garaged in the back of the RV. They weigh 2900 Lbs and most (not all) of the builders I've contacted have said I would need the tandem rear axel. I won't be towing anything but plan to store a few hundred pounds of gear back there with the Mini (mostly windsurfing gear <400lbs)

With the Mini likely being centered over the rear axles, i would also recommmend keeping the tandems. The good news of course is that the cost won't increase (except for aluminum wheels perhaps) and that you could always put a heavier car in at some future point.

IMHO, this is not a do-able choice. other factors are the length of the wheelbase to keep enough weight on the front axle to be able to steer it, the weight of the cooper isn't the only thing you'd have, the back door-lift, what ever you'd carry, and the structure, frame rails, floor et.. a single axle can be ok IF the rear is heavy enough, 26,000# still wouldn't be enough and you'd be over the legal weight anyway. NOT picking or tryin' to discourage, just passin' along info to consider. anything can be done--- i just don't think it would work satisfactorly.---- mase
