My new tv mount.

My coach was made back in '03, before the flat tv craze. So, they put in a 20" tube. Heavy and takes up lots of space with not a very big screen. I bought a 27" lcd and then tried to figure out how to mount it where the tube came out. 27" was the largest I could fit over the old opening. I decided to get one of those wall mounts that allows the tv to move out and swivel. That way I can get into the big cabinet where the old tube used to be and store junk in there. It would also allow the tv to be better viewed while sitting in the dinette I figure. Here's the opening:

I put that 3/4" plywood down to provide some more strength to the base of the cabinet, it seemed kind of flimsey to me.

Here's the bracket I made out of 1" square steel tubing, 11 guage:

I used a shelf board underneath the existing cabinet to add strength. 8 bolts through the whole thing should hold I hope. The only thing I'm kind of worried about is it might swivel around a bit when rolling down the road? I haven't driven with it yet. I'm thinking I can make some sort of bracket/bar or something to insert across the back when the tv is closed up in front of the cabinet? Maybe with a slot type bracket on each side to rest the bar in? That would engage the swivel portion of the hanger to lock the screen in place, and stop it from swinging out too. Thought I'd throw it out here in case somebody has another idea? Kind of like how we solved Gene's car tie down issue. Maybe the thing won't even move and it won't be a problem. Anybody else's tv mounted on one of these swivel types? Does it stay put under way?

The opening next to it has the surround sound/dvd player. It had a vcr and satelite box there too. Who watches video tape anymore? I had to pay $5.00 to drop that at the recycler. I use my directv box from the house when we go on the road so I just pop it up there and plug it in. Not the pretiest, but works fine. Can't see paying for another sat. box that will sit there a bunch of the year.

And no comments about what a crappy welder I am. It may not be pretty but I bet it won't come apart.

nice work, I'll be tackeling that same problem next weekend, I think I'll mount mine solid for now, I gotta get it on the road in 3 weeks.

The last time we talked to DirecTV about it, you can pay a small fee(5ish dollars) to add an additional access card for a motorhome receiver. You can call them to activate and they'll only charge you the fee as long as you need it, when you park for the winter you can deactivate.

I don't know if this is still accurate, we last asked them a couple years ago.

Hay Todd, 3 weeks? Is this going to be the maiden voyage for it? I don't remember if you went camping in it last summer? Coming down to the cities? I might put a flat tv on the wall in the bedroom so that one I'll just mount to the wall. Should be easier than the swivel one.

Ya Brad, I could probably do that if I could afford to pay for another box. But it's real easy to unplug my box in the bedroom and toss it up on that shelf and plug it in in the rig.

We would like to run it down to Nashville the last weekend of April, we have a conference there. We want to stop in Kansas City, there is a Mexican restaurant that serves the worlds greatest Mararitas at least we thought so the last time we were there. Then overnight in a Walmart and on to St Louis Finance Director has never been up in the arch. No trip to St. Louis would be complete without the brewery tour. Then over to Nashville. Coming home may be up though Michagan.

BUT WE HAVE MUCH TO DO BEFORE WE CAN GO.

I spent all day today cutting trim, FD is going to stain and varnish tomorrow. Then I need to hook up propane tanks (if I can find 90 degree propane fittings). We also need to hook up tank monitor wires an then I can finish plumbing the gray and black tanks. Hanging the TV may not happen till we get back. Oh I need to make a appt to fix a leaky pass front wheel seal.

FD wants the whole weekend prior to clean. will see...

My neighbor made a suggestion. Velcro. The bottom edge of the tv is what hits the cabinet first when pushing the tv back over the opening since I angled the tv down a bit toward the sofa for best viewing. So, he said, "why not put some velcro along the bottom here and when it's pushed in the velcro should hold it there." Wow, looks like a good idea to me. I've got some of that 2" wide heavy duty stuff that I keep in a drawer in the coach. I'm going to try that first. We'll see if that holds it while driving. If not I'll see if my locking bar idea might work. Omaha, here we come, be there for lunch on Friday.
