I came across an autoshift truck that has an appealing price, so I was wondering exactly how you operate an autoshift trans? Like I'm an idiot, could somebody please tell me step by step how it works? Thanks.

I drove an Allison 10 speed autoshift, select drive by push button (on this truck) let out the clutch and apply half throttle and leave it as it shifts up. As you decelerate it downshifts and you put the clutch in when you stop. That easy.

I am sure someone else may have something to add.

I think I've got it, but just want to be sure.

So, I use the clutch to get off the line and when coming to a complete stop, just like a regular stick shift? And the rest of the time I do nothing just like a regular automatic? Thanks.

Dano - exactly. Very, very easy to drive. The only concern is you can't forget to put the clutch in when stopping.

When driving through town a lot of the time you can slow down enough to creep along for lights and never use the clutch.

Dano,

Class 8 clutches catch very close to the top of the throw. When starting the engine, you must be in neutral. The truck will not start anywhere but neutral.

Once started, you can click into Drive, then you must depress the clutch all the way to the floor to activate the clutch brake. That's the only time you ever push the clutch pedal down more than 2 inches.

Bobtail, you can easily start out in 5th gear, by clicking the "up" button. Simply release the clutch, no throttle is required to coordinate starting off. Once rolling, throttle is applied.

The Eaton autoshift can be manually shifted with "up and down" buttons in the "hold" position. Lot's of fun!
