Recommendation on what truck to buy

What truck to buy? Hello Jakep: I converted a 2003 Pete 379 into a motorhome, not a toter. I am very pleased with the way it turned out; took me abt five years. Truck has a pre-emission Cat C-15 and an Eaton-Fuller 18 speed; 3.36 rears. Abt 870,000 miles on it when I got it. I've put abt...

does anyone drive a class 8 truck with out a cdl?

Michigan No CDL is required in Michigan as long as the class 8 is not used in commercial service; is used to haul personal possessions only; and is privately owned. For my rig, I had the title changed to read "Peterbilt Motorhome." So, technically, my rig is no longer a class eight vehicle.

    home built toter

More Info Hello Sprintracer: Tnx for your note! My wife and I looked for abt 8 years before we found the "perfect" semi to convert to our motorhome. We had plenty of time to think abt the design and options we wanted before we started to build it. As it turned out, we followed the final design...

    home built toter

Peterbilt Motorhome Hello Sprintracer: I built my motorhome on a Peterbilt 379 semi. Been working on the conversion the last four years and am about done. Started with a 2003 Pete with 900,000 miles. Dropped the front drivers, added six feet to the rear framerails, and mounted a 16' Morgan...

    frame lengthening

Frame extension I dropped the front drivers on my Pete 379 conversion and added a six foot extension to the rear using salvaged framerails from the local truck scrapper. Then I placed a 16' Morgan box on top; all has gone perfectly for 25,000 miles. Speed Gray Grand Rapids, MI

    Starting a new project

Slide Outs Good luck with your project; please keep us posted as to your progress! For all sorts of RV related components, check out two RV surplus dealers located in White Pigeon, MI; Johnson Supply and Bontragers (maybe Bontreagers). I think they both have web sites for more information. I...

    Stealth Camper Build Thread

Nice job! Hello Ran: I have enjoyed reading all the past posts your original message generated. Your most recent post about the "would I do it again" items really brought home a fortunate situation regarding my conversion project currently its its third year of work. When I originally...

TC conversion to RV titling/licensing requirements by state

Michigan Conversion This may be hard to believe, but the registration and licensing of my 2003 Peterbilt 379 conversion was almost a "pleasant" experience in dealing with the Michigan SOS. When I first bought the tractor from a local truck dealer, I went to the SOS office and asked what I...

    Toterhome build

Pete Rules! Hey Conman: Nice truck! And my favorite color, too. I did not use pucks on my conversion, still have the air-ride bags. The ride is great and I have never had any feeling of it being too hard or too rough. I did drop the front axle, but still run 100 psi in the tires. How about...

    HDT MOTORHOME AT RV PARKS

Our conversion Here is a recent picture of our Peterbilt motorhome conversion project at our favorite campground, Grand Haven State Park in Grand Haven, Michigan. On the beach, on the shore of Lake Michigan. If you are lucky enough to be at the beach, you are lucky enough!"

    installing grey+black water tanks

With my conversion project I wanted to keep the classic looks of a class 8 rig, so my solution to the gray tank question might be somewhat unique. Our layout for the camper portion of the vehicle does not include a toilet; I don't want the odor and the upkeep. Plus, where we going camping most...

    Toterhome build

Removing air-ride Hello Conman: First, good luck with your project; please keep us posted as to your progress! To answer your question, yes, the air ride on the rear of the bunk can be removed so it is "solid". This would be the way to go if you are going to provide a walk-through into the...

    volvo shimmy

Shimmy Good advise so far! I had a similar problem this spring with my Peterbilt motorhome conversion project. Here are two additional items to check: 1> Make sure the steering box, steering shaft, and all the drag-links and tie rods are tight and operate smoothly with excessive end play. If...

    Drive Tires

40's Rock: Since beginning my Peterbilt 379 motorhome conversion three years ago, I have replaced all six tires (I "singled-up" the rear). I wanted high quality tires, as I had a blowout on the the outside right rear at 60 mph after the retread failed and separated from the casing, tearing up...

    unbeilvablely rude

Crash1: Sorry to hear of your "rude" problems. Maybe the clerk was having a bad bad day; or perhaps they really didn't care. At any rate, there is no excuse for that type of behavoir. A report to the person's supervisor would certainly be in order. However, don't throw the baby out with the...

Converting a toterhome to a full T/C motorhome

Why Black? Hi ya 90! Why black? First, my wife likes black. Second, it matches the tractor. In the future I also plan to extend the red portion of the tractor back to the box, so the black area will be reduced somewhat. The box will have 2" of insulation plus 3/4" additional hard maple...

Converting a toterhome to a full T/C motorhome

Cost of box, etc. Hi Hot Rod: To answer your question immediately; around $12M by the time all the work was done. Went to my local Morgan dealer here in Grand Rapids, and ordered it through them. One nice thing about buying a new box is you get it exactly the way you want it not buying it off...

For the "joy" of it all . . . Hello all you HDTers: Been kinda quiet here on the board for the last couple of weeks; guess everyone is getting in their last outside work before the weather turns cold! I have followed the information about racingjunk for awhile now, even though I already have...
