    gulfstream supernova

The 18 AutoShift can skip gears on its own. I want the split upper gears, and there is not an auto verion of the 13. Their 14 speed performance transmission is full auto, with no clutch, and can only be had up to 1750 ft. pounds, which means uprating the motor is no go. I would consider...

    gulfstream supernova

It appears to me that there is generally a good impression of ShowHauler (the note string below this shows someone that has had two and will go there for the third). That tells me a lot. One issue for me will be how flexible they can be with using concepts and materials less common in RV...

    "NO LEAK ROOF"

I haven't had much to say lately, and have only followed irregularly, but what shop are you using? I looked at the photos, and realized that you appear to be doing this in a commercial setting. Since I am collecting info (do it once, do it right), I thought I would inquire.

Side door questions. Oversized entrance door.

It almost looks like a standard size screen door. I can't advocate this specific setup, as it is really weak in terms of security. I would consider a standard size door with a high quality home style door bought for security purposes, much as I have for the front door of the house.

    2006 Toolset Coach on a 99 Volvo VN610

Volvo query: how do most folks deal with the integral sleeper? It seems expensive to buy a sleeper equipped truck just to cut it off, and I wonder about the structural integrity impacts. Since Volvo now has an 800 series day cab, I am less reticent about using one as the basis for a...

    Volvo 770/780 6x6 conversion

If one is really dedicated to an AWD truck conversion, the better course is to find a manufacturer who does such as part of a special order new vehicle. Western Star does, and Freightliner can (same company); I think KW also can/will. While it is obvious to me that deep boondocking is not...

Do Truck Conversions ever have tag axles like MCI busses?

I have thought about it, and will have serious discussions with the dealer and manufacturer when it comes time; a tag out back helps with weight capacity (a single RA is likely to be too light in capacity), but can be lifted for tight spots and to put more weight on the drive axle when in the slop.

Is a manual transmission ever better than an auto in a conversion?

I prefer a true manual, personally. Unless I end up short a leg, I would never have a full auto, even though there are convenience arguments in favor, especially the co-driver issue. I am simply not inclined to take the risk of not having a clutch, plus Fastlap's report on his experience with...

New Fuller Transmission (the link is for a PDF file)

http://www.roadranger.com/NASApp/cs/BlobServer?blobcol=...bwhere=1082235657012 http://tinyurl.com/d25nf This is the new Fuller UltraShift LHP transmission. It is a 14 speed forward (13 plus an extra low), 3 reverse fully automated (2 pedal) transmission. I am not sure, but it appears to me...

2005 Kingsley 45' and 3 more on ebay.

I went and looked at the dealer site; they say "will covert to automatic". I don't know that any of the roadranger transmissions can be easily converted, so I am assuming that they mean remove and replace, which would be spendy. Auto vs. Manual: It depends on the transmission and needs. Unless...

    Front axle weights

My recollection is that 12K is maximum legal load on a 80K semi and trailer combination; 10,280 was the maximum under the old (pre- STAA) limit of 73,280. It is possible to spec a lot higher, but of little worth, generally, if the rest of the weight is properly balanced. You may need to have a...

Coach in the Making Two - Truck Spec's

Glad to see that Bill is aware of the power issues. I suspect that someone who has not given it much thought might follow his lead without considering how and why he came to that conclusion. In the midwest, running north and south, there are darned few real pulls. The only one I can think of is...

Drive a M2 of you are going NEW...

The new MB engine option may make this a much more viable choice, as that is a 15% increase in torque. That's one heck of an improvement; 860 foot pounds just doesn't cut it. Some of that is influenced by the area in which you live/drive. The midwest does not have the long pulls of the West and...

Used 4 door medium trucks for pulling RV

I went and looked at this truck, and for the price, I don't see the point. It costs darned near as much as an awfully nice brand new class 8, and is not nearly as capable. The motor is too small (torque being the really important issue here) and this is spec'd with the auto tranny. At least get...

Sanity check needed on a floorplan/blueprints...

There may be another possible answer to the weight and axle problem: a single screw with a tag axle placed far enough away that the weight is better balanced. I'd have to think about how to do it, which is not going to happen right now, but it might be one way to address this.

    Saw something interesting recently

The Spokane paper has a column about RVing. I have seen some interesting things in it. The one from a couple weeks ago is about a converted Hendrickson airport fire truck (I think) made into a special purpose RV for someone who needs to get way out in the woods for professional reasons, but is...

    Tranny Numbers?

Well, the first thing to do is to go to the Roadranger page (www.roadranger.com) and follow the links for transmissions. The letters have to do with the basic class of the tranny (overdrive or not, etc); the first two digits are roughly the torque rating/1000, the third digit is the series...

Preventing Grafitti on your motorhome questions.

Avoid questionable areas, for lots of reasons besides grafitti, such as your safety. An 8 foot fence surrounding the MH, topped with concertina roll, and a pack of Mastiffs within it would probably be effective. :-)

How do you use "Air Brakes" efficiently???

The added material on the screen has pushed the post button off to the bottom. What I have been doing is dragging the window up to the top of the screen, almost off it, then pulling the corner to stretch the window back out, revealing the post button.

Is This A Good Place To Start ?

I would say that is correct. I note for example that the 380/410 Mack delivers 1560 ft-lbs. That is probably more than enough, even with a tandem and building your Class 8 RV to the max (as I probably would, using it for more or less full timing). I strongly suspect that even the 310/330 would...

Is This A Good Place To Start ?

Onezman said: A 10 speed will get the job done 99% of the time for all OTR applications. 18 and 15 speed transmissions are becomming a thing of the past in the market place. Generally, 18 speeds are only used for very heavy haul applications. These transmissions were popular when HP ranged from...

    What happened?

I hate to tell you this, but the longer posts which were made into multiple pages by that display you used for that day are still a mess. They don't plot right, and I couldn't respond to one because the response window opened up without enough room for the scrolling arrows. In fact, I just...

    What happened?

Something seems to have happened to the layout of the forum. Suddenly all of the notes are wider and take a lot more pages, too. Nothing plots right, and this page took several times more room; I had a heck of a time getting far enough down in the window to even post this! Any idea?

    I MADE A MISTAKE.....

Check your state laws, there is often a combined length maximum. As I recall, typical for a tractor and semi-trailer is about 75 feet. (I haven't look at that for a while.) That's pretty long, especially in the urban NE or in an RV park - you might have a hell of a time getting around. With a...
