    Bart - Frame Build Photos

Hello, Onezman. The bed will be unbolted and lifted off for the finish welding and box build. At that time, we will undercoat it all. Thanks - Joe 1998 Volvo VNL64T610 N14Cummins
  2. Top Plate Supports

    Top Plate Supports

The top of the bed (3/8" steel) will be supported using the 3" beams and steel angles.
  3. 45 Degree Angle

    45 Degree Angle

The top plate will be welded to the bed sides using this 45 degree transition. The angle will provide another inch of drop for the ToyTrax Motorcycle Lift. Both the angle and the top of the bed will get a Rhino Lining coating.
  4. Drop-in Front Plate

    Drop-in Front Plate

The front 14" of the bed deck is a drop in plate that will be bolted (from the top) to allow removal and access to the sleeper's air suspension components and other "stuff".

    Bart - Frame Build Photos

I'm posting a couple more pictures of the top of the bed tonight. Bill gave me some more space, but I'll keep your offer in mind. Thanks - Joe 1998 Volvo VNL64T610 N14Cummins

    Bart - Frame Build Photos

I've posted four photos of the bed frame being built on Bart. The batteries are disconnected; the ECM is unhooked, and the steel is being gounded before the welding takes place. (I'd post more photos; but the site says I've used up all my space in my folder\album.) Joe 1998 Volvo VNL64T610...

Bart - Air Slider TrailerSaver Hitch Photo

Oldphoneman - instead of writing words, I'll post more pictures. My bed is being built by a full-blown machine shop. They put out quality work. Kevin, the guy who is building my bed has been around trucks all his life and is also an RVer. He's excited about building the bed and he's damn...

Bart - Air Slider TrailerSaver Hitch Photo

OLDphoneman - How could you write that much and then say you don't mean to be critical? How can you ask questions like: "Are you satisfied with your design -- Is it engineered properly -- fastened securely -- and do you know how to operate (it)" and then say your not being critical? Your being...

    TrailerSaver/Air Slider

We've started work on Bart (Big A** Red Truck). The first step was to pull off the big Fontaine hitch and install the TrailerSaver hitch on the existing air slider frame. I believe I have about 24" of front-to-rear movement available with this setup.

Bart - Air Slider TrailerSaver Hitch Photo

Forgot to add this - To see the picture, go to the forum home, select photos, go to the MDT sectoin of the Truck Conversions album and scroll down to the shot. I will be adding other pictures of Bart as we progress on the bed build. Joe 1998 Volvo VNL64T610 N14Cummins

Bart - Air Slider TrailerSaver Hitch Photo

I added a picture of the TrailerSaver Hitch that we mounted onto the existing Fontaine air slider base plate. This should allow me about 24" of front-to-rear hitch movement. I did this because I don't have the 5er yet and I'm mounting a ToyTrax motorcycle lift right behind the sleeper. Since...

    GMAC Raises My Insurance Cost?

Well, I found out what the rate raise was all about. According the GMAC, I didn't verify my wife's information at the time I was insured (age, dirver's license #, etc.). Since they didn't have it on file "the computer" automatically generated a rate increase. After some rather direct comments...

    GMAC Raises My Insurance Cost?

I bought a six-month policy (in Feb) from GMAC on my (onezman) Volvo. GMAC first quoted me a price of $564.00. Two weeks after the policy took effect, they sent me a refund of $25.00, making the total cost of $539.00. Yesterday, I got a brand new policy and a statement saying I owed another...

    Volvo 610 / 40' Alpha 5'er

Thanks, OLDphoneman. I'm a month or so away from needing an inverter. My truck goes into the shop for the bed build sometime next week. Right now, it won't start -- it's 4 degrees here. I've got the engine heater plugged in, but the batteries just won't cut it in this cold. I may have to...

    Volvo 610 / 40' Alpha 5'er

Thanks, OLDphoneman. I've got two questions - I think that inverters are meant to be used with deep cell batteries (golf cart, marine batteries, etc.) Does it hurt to use the batteries in your truck -- which were designed for one thing - cold cranking amps? Second, my three batteries are...

    Volvo 610 / 40' Alpha 5'er

Thanks for the response OLDphoneman and onezman. I understand what your doing OLDphoneman. But, for me, I'll going with the quasi sine wave inverter. phred's Poop Sheets (Escapees) comment that the pure sine wave inverters are really only necessary for some of the more touchy laser printers...

    Volvo 610 / 40' Alpha 5'er

Mercy oldphoneman, a true (pure) sine wave inverter! I don't know all that much about inverters (except what I read in the Poop Sheets by phred). I was thining that a quasi sine wave would work just fine for the refrigerator and microwave. What about you onezman, was the one you installed a...

    Volvo 610 / 40' Alpha 5'er

Bill - I just picked up my '98 Volvo on Saturday. I'd never driven a big truck. Bought it from onezman (Larry Zeigler) and he gave me a couple hours of lessons; but it was starting to sleet and snow so I headed home before "graduating" from gear-shifting school. Had no problem keeping it...

    Okay, I'm in the Club

Well, after a year(+) of looking and reading, etc., I'm now the owner of a 1998 Volvo VNL64T610 by way of Larry Zeigler. Picked it up today at Larry's and after a couple of hours of tutoring from Larry drove it back to Jefferson City. I've got a lot to learn and will be leaning on some of you...

Tennessee Says "No" to Volvo Motorhome

Thanks for the posts. The one thing the CVE officer in Tennessee did tell me was that I might be able to license the truck using J Tags. I believe those are designed for farm use. But the non-commercial, not-for-hire might be the best way to go, at least to get started. Thanks again - Joe Joe

Tennessee Says "No" to Volvo Motorhome

I emailed Tennessee officials to get specific requirements to title & license a Volvo 610 as a motorhome. Their response: 55-1-104(2) A Motor home is defined as a motor vehicle which is designed, constructed (either originally by the manufacturer or rebuilt by another) and equipped as a...

    1999 & 2000 Volvos

Chuck - I talked to Steve at the Freightliner dealership in La Crosee where these Volvos are coming in. He's still looking at a December delivery. He told me these trucks are coming out of Minnesota, so the 12% FET has already been paid. Really looking forward to a report from you once they...

So Many Trucks, So Little Time!

onezman, warpath and Bill R - thanks for the comments. I'm almost ready to buy a truck. It will be a Volvo 610 for sure -- why? Because the commander-in-chief (CINC-House), otherwise known as the wife, likes them! And if the wife likes the Class 8 Volvo over a Class 6 rig, I've got it made...

Converting Class 8 to a tow vehicle for a 5er

onezman is right about the Kenworths. The T2000s are pretty trucks but they have a fulcrum setup on the rear duels. You can't just pull out the front axle, slap in a carrier bearing and drive off. The Kenworth dealer I talked to in Kansas City said it would cost big bucks to re-work the whole...
