    45 vs. 46 footer

I don't remember the trooper's name however,...he was driving an unmarked (black) Tahoe.

    45 vs. 46 footer

Speaking of Mn Cops,...I went up I-35 last Spring, in route to Walker, Mn to pick up a John Deere Tractor I'd bought on Ebay. Just South of Minneapolis, was stopped by a trooper whom advised that I didn't have the saftey chains "crossed" (between the trailer & receiver hitch). Well,...I'm also...

Solar Setup, and a HAPPY THANKSGIVING

We like to dry camp in SW Arizona come Jan or Feb. I set up 4 Semens 100 watt (ea) panels on a motorized tilt that will raise them up to 35 degrees. As we generally park in the desert, I can orient the truck so the panels have a SW exposure. These were aprox $500 each. They supply power through...

    Stealth Camper Build Thread

I would have some reservations in using da big ass screwdriver. I've managed to melt one doing the starter jump jig - scared the hell out of myself!!

Front Axle Rating for a HDT Motorhome

Overall length is a factor as well as wheel base. If you stretch the rear axle placement out to the far (rear) end of the frame, you might want to consider a 16K ft axle, as the weight will be forward biased. My rig is 42' twin screw & has a 16k ft axle. This may be overkill however, that is how...

    Stealth Camper Build Thread

On the other hand,...I went with a high efficiency 120VAC refrig. It doesn't need leveled, cools down (from being shut off)quickly, & only costs a little over $250 to replace if it crapps out (not $1k+ like propane refrig). We're set to dry camp, so with 400 watts of solar, 8 deep-cycle 6V...

    Maintenance Talk lacking

IMHO,...truck conversions are "generally" built somewhat better than a typical motorhome (with some exceptions). Keep in mind that most conversions use quite a few of the same components as a motorhome - water heater & pump, furnace, roof AC's, etc,... As far as basic design goes, [most]...

    Power Inverters

I know a little about inverters,...basically most pure sine types are somewhat more efficient & will run induction loads better than a stepped (modified) sine. So anything that had a transformer in it, or a motor (referigeration compressor) will be happier with pure sine. However,...a high end...

applying the roof and outer skin

I would suggest Sikaflex 252 for your walls. The steel (& alum) needs to be completely cleaned & void of any oil or crud. This is the same product used in the manufacture of commercial truck bodies. Once completely cured (aprox 24 hours) it is impossible to separate the bond without destroying...

Renegade vs others re construction methods questions.

I toured the Renegade factory in Elkhart aprox 3 years ago. They use FRP in their walls & the ceilings are made of the same. The only structure inside, (that I remember) was wood bonded to the FRP primarily for mounting cabinets etc,... Also toured Haulmark,... construction is the same. While...

Hello. thoughs on a pop up of a pop up.

Can you say "top heavy",...I've driven a couple of box vans & found that they were not well suited to cornering in stock form. Can't imagine what the extra structure & weight of a pop-up would do. Might be ok if you limit speed to 10mph in a turn.

Is a truck conversion harder on the trailer?

Most likely, his chassis &/or hitch flexes enough to absorb road bumps.

being damn careful with a side mounted gas grill

I'm thinking it might be a good idea to buy any big ticket items that you may want - NOW! When we get "stimulated" I do believe we will also get screwed with double digit inflation. It stands to reason that when da blama prints enough paper to double the money supply - that paper won't be worth...

Where to Buy Small Truck conversion?

Suggest check with Jason Hawk, http://www.hawkengineering.com/ This would be right up his alley. Disclaimer: I am in no way connected to, or affiliated with this company,...just a satisfied customer.

    Building a a box for a conversion

Sounds like a good plan however, it might be advisable to buy the truck first. There are numerous little differences in chassis, suspension, cab floor height, etc, where you would need exact measurements to fit your body.

Ball mount/hitch plate for 40,000 lb. hitch?

Suggest weld a receiver tube under flat on your existing 40K pound hitch, then you can put any sized ball in it that you want by just changing out the stinger/ball assembly. When using the 2&5/16" - remove the stinger.

    Converting shipping container to trailer

Another factor you might want to consider in the container selection process (besides rust & appearance) is the structural condition. If it's been drop kicked, bounced, or otherwise abused, & most have,...it's probably out of square in several different directions. When you start your build...

    What is a "heat strip?"

Some roof AC's can be equipped with a (resistance) heat strip that will sort-of knock the chill off on a cool day. They aren't real effective on a cold day - you would still need some other source of heat. Another form of heat strip is a 110V flex type, for rapping around pipes to prevent...

    Roof Sealant

Hawk used a 4" wide sealant tape (on our conversion) to cover the laps on top (which can't be seen from the ground). I don't remember the name of the stuff but it conforms to lumps, bumps and irregularities. It sticks fast, & apparently seals tight - 3 years & no problems. I think it's in the...

    Insurance woes

I've got mine with State Farm. They will normally take a conversion if you have your other vehicles with them. Full coverage (fairly high liab limits) with $1K deductable on collision & comp is around $660 per year (not 6 months).
