Is This A Good Place To Start ?

It may not be perfect, but if it is in good shape, I would not be afraid of it. Too many gears? Phoeey. It's an autoshift. You will not care, as it does all the work. Too much power? No such thing, just don't go ape stomping on the throttle. Too tall? Maybe, as I have not been in many RV parks...

Is This A Good Place To Start ?

If I recall correctly, the 18 Autoshift will do its own skip shifting. I am pretty sure I saw that once when I downloaded the driver's manual for that tranny. That's what I would have if I were to spec an OTR truck again for some reason.

    Any Showhaulers out West?

Sean, are you going to be up north at all while that far west? I live just off of I90 in Washington State.

    Freightliner M2 106 Chassis - Part 2

It may be a real problem, however. I had a first generation Mack CH on which the radiator ended up being too small. We had a lot of trouble as a result - the aftercooler blew twice, damned thing ran hot a LOT, etc. I would not dismiss this issue out of hand. The HP difference is not the thing...

And that ability shows some of the risk of not carefully specing the rest of the drivetrain. For example, in the note above, the Freedomline 12 speed has a maximum torque rating of 1650 foot pounds. Without even getting close to the risky area of making a crispy critter of the engine, it is...

Right now, none, as they don't meet US emissions standards. I am guessing that the demand is simply not enough for the engine makers (Cat and Cummins) to invest in testing and certification. The Signature 600 Cummins and Cat C16 are only useful to specialized needs such as heavy haulers, and...

    More goof ball questions

I am guessing that it depends on the truck manufacturer and the plans of SH at the time they order the truck. Some manufacturers are more responsive to unusual orders and specs. I would think it preferable to order it with the right wheelbase from the start, and plan to do that if I get to the...

    New chassis selection

If you are considering an autoshift, take a look at the Eaton products. They are more likely to be easily serviced if you have a problem. It's not a matter of quality, as I am not familiar enough with the two to compare that, but simply of logistics. I would go with the KW over the Freightliner...

    Toterhome question

In the long run, you cannot go too big or have too much horsepower (within reason). Take a look at the folks you see struggling about with pickup trucks towing things they can't handle, etc. I would not go as big as a C15 Cat, but something that gives you 350 HP and 1200 ft. pounds of torque is...

    Freightliners M2 106 Chassis

It's too bad that one has to go to the 112 to get into the mid-bore motors. The 3126 simply is too small for areas outside the flatlands of the Midwest. (I spent 14 years in Illinois, much of it involved in trucking, and there is a large difference between the conditions there and those in the...

    Freightliners M2 106 Chassis

Of interest to me is the price. I can see the possible virtues of a smaller rig now that we ended up having to buy the second house anyway. I would be able to get by with something smaller as I would not be living in it 5- 14 days at a time, but only a few days during vacations. (Yellowstone...

    Do your bags bleed off?

They will bleed off some small amount when the truck sits. Mine would do that when I drove OTR. The shifting of a trialer in the wind, the poressure of the weight on the bags, the slow drain from the exit valves, etc, will usually run the air down. You should drain the tanks every couple of days...

A list of Banks or loan brokers for Truck Conversions.

I had been planning on 20% or more, and can do it through my Credit Union. Due to some professional opportunities that did and did not arise, I had to make a choice and had to get another house. This is going to be a long term plan for me, and I will probably due it all custom from the start...

    Manual trannie user questions.

One thing I saw that is disappointing. Looking at the roadranger website, I see that the Lightning is only available up to a 1650 lb torque rating, but the autoshift 10 speed (which is based on another transmission) is available up to 1850. Grr. Given that I am more inclined to a C15 now (both...

    Manual trannie user questions.

I would guess you need to have the clutch looked at; it is probably slipping. With that many miles, I am guessing it has been adjusted many a time and will need to be R&R. If at all close to being out of adjustment range, I wuold do that. As for the shudder, etc - it may be related to the...

    GearMaster, Opinions Please...

Think of it this way: for $1500, you can get 9 - 10K miles worth of fuel, and go practice. It's a psychomotor skill, and will improve with practice. I rarely use the clutch in anything I drive (including passenger cars), and it's actually pretty easy once you get used to the idea of what you...

    GearMaster, Opinions Please...

I would hope that this is a staggering waste of money. You should be able to drive, including skip shifting, entirely by ear and feel. It takes only a modicum of experience, especially when you only drive the same power train and don't have to use multiple vehicles, to know your drivetrain well...

A new Showhauler was conceived on 5/20/03!

I share the concerns about LPG, and find them enough of a concern that I would be unwilling to have it if I can avoid it. Our office is also the coroner's office due to a crazy law here in Washington, and I've seen the aftermath of serious crashes and fires. No thanks. I would try to set up the...

A new Showhauler was conceived on 5/20/03!

Why would one need LP for the refrigerator or any other appliance/use? If one is dedicated to going all electric, all that is needed to is to spec all of the accessories accordingly. Myself, I would probably go that way (don't want the flammable tank of LP), and use solar panels and as many deep...

    65 mph limiter removal?

I know that at one time, the Series 60 motors were set up to shut down after a certain period of time at idle, and the means by which the engine was able to confirm idle state was the oil pressure. I would not be surprised if your Cummins has a similar feature. The oil pressure at idle is lower...
