"Not For Hire" vs "RV" question

You are probably correct about the commercial 5th wheel being hard on a camper. That would probably be pretty easy to solve with a trailsaver or similar 5er hitch. IMPO using a full blown semi tractor to transport 5ers probably wouldn't pay too well because of the higher costs involved. Some of...

"Not For Hire" vs "RV" question

I think the IN regulations are pretty much the same as the IL regulations. You could buy a used HDT for less than a good dually make the minimal conversions and then trade up when the time came. I think the most difficult part of the conversion process is the potable water and holding tanks...

"Not For Hire" vs "RV" question

HD_RIDER, You are asking several questions with different angles. Bill is correct in that you can be "not for hire" and still be commercial and under DOT regs. That's the way my DOT is set up, unless you are doing business out of your rig you don't want to go there. You already understand the...

    Lug nut size???

Yes, they make 4 way wrenches for HDTs. You get the torque by means of a bar that is inserted through the center of the 4 way wrench.

    Truck conversion for my business...

You need to spend sometime on racingjunk.com getting educated on equipment and prices. I searched for almost a year to find my rig, and if you are patient yopou will find one too. You may have to raise your price level slightly, but not by much. Check out the Towing/Toterhome section Racing Junk

101 questions about doing my own conversion...

Truckguy, don't know if you have been over to racing junk.com but it is an education just looking at the ads. IMO I think I could buy a rig cheaper than build my own. It's kinda like houses, whatever you think it will cost.....double it. Racing Junk Go to the towing section and "toterhomes"

    AIR HORNS

And therein is the rub, no place to plug in so unless you want to run the genset all of the time you don't have refrigeration. Most of the places we go don't have electrical service, you can believe that I take advantage of it whenever it is available.

    AIR HORNS

I see no reason for "propane paranoia" but then I am an IPGA trained serviceman. I love my propane fired frig and heat that doesn't require any power to keep cold or warm.

    Length Limits

Tom Meents, the monster truck driver lives near me. He said that he licenses his monster truck hauler as a commercial rig and it costs him $6500 for tags and insurance before he pulls out of the driveway. That doesn't include a few other fuel and excise taxes that he pays. I just got the...

    Length restrictions

You won't have nearly the problem on interstate highways as you will on local roads. I had a 48 foot gooseneck behind my freightliner and was 74 feet long. Let me tell you that I was hitting every curb in sight trying to make the corners on local roads.

    New York Conversion Reg Questions

You may be "NOT FOR HIRE" but you are certainly commercial if you vend out of the truck. As such you will be subject to a bunch of different regulations. You might want to check with Tim (fppf) over on the Escapees HDT discussion board. Escapees HDT Board

Building fold down/out stairs for entry into side door

Here is the step I was thinking of, Ad says it is 36", 4 step, I was thinking I could get creative with Attachment and a stand/platform at the bottom to make it work. $251.00 Step Ad Link

Building fold down/out stairs for entry into side door

Kirk, If you figure that one out let me know and post pictures. I've tried all kinds of ideas but they either end up too heavy or too bulky. My best success so far has been to use a 3 step utility step like your wife would use in the kitchen or for cleaning windows. It's cheap, doesn't weigh...

    What do you call it

We pulled into the campground late Friday night and were unable to register until Saturday afternoon because we were fishing. When we pulled up to the gate house to register in my son's PU with the boat behind the lady asked what lot I parked in. "Lot 20" I said. "OH! THE SEMI TRUCK!" she said...

I'm happy. I use COUNTRY insurance in Bloomington, IL. I have a 1997 GMC CrewCab Dually ($313.46) 1993 Freightliner Conversion ($284.48) a Pace enclosed trailer ($17.56) and a Corn Pro Flatbed trailer ($33.55) all on the same policy. Looking to get into low-end motorhome/toterhome

Well, I would have to say that the price is "right". Not much information to go by in the ad though. What about the chassis? Miles? Motor? Trans? Recent OH? Everything I have looked at in that price range had some serious deficiencies.

Holy BBQ Batman! Thanks for the info and the pics. I think they may explain the differences in the prices from the various conversion companies. It also helps all of us know what questions to ask and what the answers to those questions should be. Thanks again, John
