Recommendation on what truck to buy

Two years to build it is about right. If you work hard. Don't forget it's going to cost you twice as much as you think it will. Just ask any of the several around here that have built their own. And, even if you are very accurate in your price calculations you might not spend twice as much. But...

Recommendation on what truck to buy

About the Western Star, I've heard that same complaint about Freightliner. I don't know if it's all that valid though. Especially on FL. There are just so many of these trucks on the road that any mechanic worth his salt should be able to work on it just fine. FL has a pretty extensive internet...

Recommendation on what truck to buy

Now, you're going to have a hard time finding a pre-2007 truck with less than 300k miles. I don't think the miles is that big of a deal. Maintenance is more important. My son is an owner/operator. He bought his truck about 3 years ago. It's an '03 Freightliner FL Classic with a N14 Cummins...

Recommendation on what truck to buy

You want to have 34' overall length on the coach? A day cab truck is going to be at least 10' front bumper to back of cab. That leaves you 24' for the living quarters. Now, you want a garage in there? Doesn't sound like much space left for living quarters. Pretty sure a 34' coach isn't going to...

Recommendation on what truck to buy

I've got a 10 speed 3 pedal autoshift. I like it. Never miss a gear. I just have to use the clutch to get it rolling, and when I come to a stop. Works great. The service manager at my local Kenworth shop said these boxes are extremely reliable. If I was building a camper I would never consider...

Recommendation on what truck to buy

Well, I'm pretty sure most of the people that have built their trucks would tell you it's going to cost you twice as much and take twice as long as if you bought one already built. There are enough good units for sale that you should be able to find something much cheaper and ready to go. In my...

Don't ask, don't tell. That seems to be the best way to go. Keep a low profile. We love pictures around here too. Sounds like a great setup.

    Brighter headlights

There is a guy named David Dixon that owns a Truck Conversion. He's a full timer (lives in his RV). He is a nuclear engineer and works on nuclear plants around the country. He also is pretty smart about lighting. He realized these trucks don't have good lights. So, he started a company. Lots of...

    Frame flex boot issues?

Is the cab still air ride? If not, could it be possible whatever they locked the cab down to the frame with has failed, fallen out? If they shimmed it with wood could that have broken down and come out letting the cab sag back onto the frame and cause the pinch?

    Freight liner Engine Brake

My Jake functions in 10th gear (mine is a 10 speed autoshift). When I lift off the throttle or cut off the cruise power it kicks in and starts slowing.

    Rv park parking issues?

I've attended several HDT rally's where the vast majority of attendees pull large 5th wheels with HDT's. So, I've chatted quite extensively with many of them. Only heard of a few issues with a park not letting somebody in because of size. They do maintain a pretty extensive list of big rig...

    Rv park parking issues?

I don't see any griping going on. It does appear to have strayed a bit from the original post.

    Dreaming, Options, Questions, Etc

Choosing between the HDT/trailer vs. Truck Conversion. It will be less expensive, like 38Chev said, to get the HDT/trailer. For us the Truck Conversion is the only way to go. It's so much better for us because driving in the living quarters. We often have friends/family travel with us. To pile...

Members On the road, where are you now?

It was a great trip for sure. My wife almost never road up front with me though. She's doing all sorts of stuff for the wedding so she was always busy. We're camping at that ranch for the wedding. My best buddy is going to stay with us in the camper too so that will be fun. He lives in New York...

Members On the road, where are you now?

Just got back from the World Police & Fire Games in Fairfax County, Virginia. Had a great time. Put about 2500 miles on the rig. Brought the Audi in the trailer for getting around out there. Gotta clean it out and re-pack and then off to Michigan for my son's wedding. We'll be staying that the...

    Dreaming, Options, Questions, Etc

38Chevy454, I'm pretty sure you must have meant rvnetwork.com, the Escapees forums. I have tried to see why rv.net doesn't have any chassis section for hdt's and truck conversions and have been beaten down by those idiots. They have a Super C section under the C section. They told me that covers...

Beware of scammer selling Haulmark Truck Conversion

So, a guy on another HDT camping forum found a Craigslist ad for a Haulmark Truck Conversion built on a Volvo chassis. 45' with twin screws. Ad had a bunch of nice pictures. It's a well over $200k unit. Claimed it was an '08 or '09 chassis. Ad has all sorts of info about what a great T/C it is...

My new to me 2005 Kenworth Showhauler

Great truck! I second converting the exhaust to a weed burner. Sorry about the tire issue. I run a Pressure Pro tire pressure monitor and really like having it. Nice to be able to push a button and read each tire pressure. And knowing it's going to start the alarms if the pressure gets too low...
