Researching the purchase of a Toter

Not to be a wet blanket, But having read you're from florida. Florida is Hammering all the guys with "toter" homes. The law actually reads that if any weight from the trailer is supported by the tractor it can NOT be registered non commercial. You CAN register a class 8 box truck as a MH. but...

Idle Truck Banter - truck options

You would be surprised at how many of my friends/clients would rather have a Pete or a KW instead of the Freightliner. They all have stories about being "steered" to a FL for one reason or another. The Fl is a nice and roomy cab, But I think most of us are envious of the Big stacks and all of...

Idle Truck Banter - truck options

A quick perusal of Show haulers Website Shows a few open top builds with a Lone star cab. How Cool is that? The options list still only shows an "aero" cap for the cascadia though.

Idle Truck Banter - truck options

But they all have a "standard" cab that they like to use. I spoke with a few of them at the Tampa RV show last year. If you stray away from their standard cabs the prices go up substantially. The salesman from both Show hauler and renegade were pleasant to speak with and If I recall correctly...

Idle Truck Banter - truck options

Most coach shops are engineered to fit a particular cab. The Show hauler for instance attaches their box to both the back of the cab around the edges and the removed roof section, for a more open "class A" feel. A different cab means a large redesign of their RV from the steel work up.

    What was I thinking?

Update. Captains log jan 2017 So the holidays turned out to be productive after all. We managed to ge the 120v wiring roughed in and al of the boxes hung. we prewired all of the coax for cable., wired most of the 12v wiring, sprayed the insulation, hung the pocket doors and painted the slide...

    What was I thinking?

I have built the greatest portion of this on my own. I'm having an absolute blast. I love building things and have built many things (hot rods/race cars/dune buggies/custom golf carts/ etc). So this is right up my alley. I also bought an old travel trailer for the doors/windows/slide...

    What was I thinking?

I'm hoping to get the walls sprayed this week, Then I'll drive it around and see what is still twisting. So far it is rock solid during all of my drives. Even over really bad RR tracks.

    What was I thinking?

I thought about that, but if the roof gets damaged I can weld a patch in without having to de-laminate it. It would likely catch fire if I tried to weld it with the foam.

    What was I thinking?

All of the wiring is run in the ceiling.going spray foam would stiffen it up at the expense of service ability. I added about 10 extra roof bows when I rebuilt the box, so the roof is plenty stiff. There is no need to walk on the roof since there is nothing mounted up there.

    What was I thinking?

Yes I bought it from charlie in Arkansas. The box required MAJOR amounts of work, but mechanically it's a GREAT starting point. I would def do it all over again. Charlie was great to work with through the whole process.

    Toter purchase advice

As a former diesel mechanic, I can assure you that a typical freightliner/Peterbuilt/kenworth/international dealer can and will service any Cummins, Detroit, M.B. or Cat engine. Some of them won't touch a volvo engine but over the years Freightliner has had all of the major manufacturers as...

    359 Race Rig

my wife and I fought with the black water tank as well. One solution we looked at was a short toile on an elevated platform with the black water tank above the floor instead of below it. In the end Ours worked out ok since I added to the box. But it def gave us more options.

    Toter purchase advice

More and more states are going after the "pro" teams that are skirting the law by using toters instead of properly getting DOT numbers and paying fuel taxes.

    Toter purchase advice

A lot of the "toters" are never retitled. They seem to leave that up to the new owners. Many are sold into states that don't require a cdl for non commercial and are still titled as an HDT. My customer had a toter that he purchased brand new. Since he bought it with a Montana LLC, they never...

    Toter purchase advice

one consideration that no one has mentioned yet is legality. Some states are requiring "toter homes" ie fifth wheel OR gooseneck to be registered commercial only. While "truck conversions" that use a bumper hitch to be registered as RVs. One of my customers bought his toter and assumed he could...

    What was I thinking?

LOL. the plan is to use closed cell spray foam. at 2" that should giver us an r value of around 14. The roof is def getting regular fiberglass. we will have 3 inches at the edge and 5 inches at the peak, which is plenty of room for a good r value batt insulation. Eventually I will remove the...

    What was I thinking?

Now that this thing is "dried in" We can focus on the inside. !st order of business was to add a wood firing strip to every wall stud. Next we built both walls (awaiting pocket doors). This coach is going to have a 8ft x 9.5ft bedroom with a 8ft x 4.5ft walk through bath. At this point we are...

    What was I thinking?

It was this point that my daughter dropped a pot on out porcelain tile at home and broke it. This got me wondering if my flooring plan would have to change. I decided to scrap the porcelain tile I had picked out and go with a grout able vinyl tile. Well this now meant that I needed to add...

    What was I thinking?

Once we got the main floor down It was time for the slide floor. After laminating a 4x12 ft sheet of 1 inch plywood, I covered it with the same black plastic stretched and glued in place. I then screwed the floor into the 1x2 box tubing sides. Next we used 3m vhb tape to attache the side of...

    What was I thinking?

Well it's been awhile since my last update, so here goes. I treated the entire box with ospho rust reverse and then with 3 coats of truck bed liner. We then laid down a layer of woven plastic (the stuff they use under mobile homes). On that we screwed down 3/4 pressure treated plywood.

    Fuel MPG

If your going to spend the money, You should look at gears. . Most HDTs are geared to pull 80k pounds. Our trucks just don't carry that much. Upping the HP will make the engine work a little easier but it takes fuel to make HP. Find out what RPM peak torque on your engine is and gear your truck...

    Using winnebago box

Check to make sure your 550 doesn't drop down under the cab, then come back up for the flat frame. All the ones I have seen do, although I'm not by any means an expert on f550s. There are going to be year differences and such. I would hate for you to get to the point of re-attaching things to...
