A good TPMS would have prevented this mishap. Always carry a proper jack and blocks to jack up the trailer by the frame, not the axle.
 
I agree with your suggestions - I didn't have a suitable jack capable of lifting the trailer at the frame, only one that could raise the axle against the leaf springs. Being far from anywhere with tools or services, this was the only option. The TPMS would definitely have been handy.
