Made it from California to Bell II BC with no problems. Road was in great shape. Somewhere between Bell II and Dease Lake, BC, we got an "Electric trailer brake is disconnected" notice on the instrument panel on our truck. After a couple of miles, we found a nice place to pull off the road.
I got out and took a look at the trailer electrical connector to see if the trailer plug got loose. From behind me, my friend shouts "Hey Ed, you're missing a tire!" I thought he was joking, but as you'll see, it was no joke.
It took an hour to cut the steel remains of the tire off the rim and axle, tape up the shredded insulation on trailer brake wiring (the short is what caused the notification) and mount the spare. I used the jack from our RAM 1500 to jack the trailer - pretty sketchy, not the safest tool to use, but the only jack we had.
Drove about 5 more hours to Watson Lake, YT where we camped. I found a nice woman running a tire shop, still open at 9 PM, who sold me a new steel wheel and tire, so I'd have a spare. Oh, I also bought a bottle jack!
We drove about another week before getting to Fairbanks where I discovered tires on the rear axle were wearing very badly in the inside edges. Now I knew we had a bent axle. The fix of the bent axle can be found in the thread:
