- Biography
- When my brother retired from hauling horses, he faced a situation - go with a class A or continue with a 5er. The class A doesn't have as much living space, it's much heavier and the mileage sux.
He decided to stay with the 5er - with one exception - a 43 Jamco LQ horse hauler. It weighs 22000# - 16000 empty. With some mods we made the front 24' as living quarters with 1.5 baths/shower, a sofa bed and queen, full kitchen. It sleeps four. The back section - we removed the stalls - welded racks on the walls and are able to put a Goldwing and Harley side by side with room to spare. But, I usually put my CJ-3 and atv end to end - still with room to spare. We haul it with my Pete 378. Mileage is about 10-12, which at 4.25/gal is working out pretty good.
I've found a Unimog L5000 in the Netherlands, that at half the weight of my Pete, will pull the same weight with less hp. It's a crew cab with a 220hp with 650lbs torque, 8fwd/6rev manual (yea) fitted with Michelin 445/70 R24 tires. I
