I've seen some '98 Volvos listed with a "VED-12" engine. Is this a carry over from the White/GMC days; something to be avoided when shopping for a potential conversion? Detroit, Cat, and Cummins all have good track records, but what about this one? Still trying to narrow down prospects, still asking questions....

The VED-12 was not available in the older-style Volvos, if I recall correctly, and from what I hear from various sources, it is a very good and very economical engine. This is what "I" hear. Any other opinions out there?

I talked to a truck lot salesman that had a few Volvos on the lot, and he explained that the VED-12 is Volvo's own engine, used overseas for several years but only available here for the last few. He knows of fleet owners that are quite happy with them, the biggest downside being that you have to find a Volvo shop for any work needed. A fleet owner that runs them in his dump trucks claims slightly better fuel mileage compared to Detroits, but that's just his opinion....

If the VED-12 gets better mileage than the Detroit Series 60, then it has to be the mileage champ, as the Detroit usually beats the larger Cummins and Cat motors, and sometimes even the smaller ones. Good engine for a conversion- Power AND mileage!

I am certified in Cummins, Detroit, Cat, and larger Diesels (Fairbanks Morris, Colt and SACM). I speced a VED12 465/1650 in my Toter. WHY? After researching them all, I was most impressed with the Volvo. Gets decent mileage to.

You guys on this forum have been a great asset in understanding the various aspects of this project that I will be getting involved in; I have a pretty good idea what to look for, what to avoid, and why. Now it's just a matter of being patient until I can afford to make the purchase. I'll be asking many more questions, I'm sure, as I proceed.
Many thanks....
