AC transfer switch
As the Renegade turns, this morning about 1 am my transfer switch quit and was smoking when I got there! So what is everyone else using. I did a quick search and found that this switch had a recall because of not able to carry a 50 amp load in 2012. So much for the PO ers doing their job.

NRC uses TRC transfer switches. The 41260 failed after 4 years and after talking to the factory reps I installed a TRC40350RVC. This one has better surge protection and less problems than the 41260. As with everything else though, with enhanced quality come higher cost.

Ours is an ESCO ES50M-65N, PPL has it for 188 bucks and they show an alternative for $174
The ESCO's are pretty common.
I've bought LOTS of stuff from PPL they usually can't be beat on availability or price.
Automatic Transfer Switches - PPL Motor Homes
Are you running any kind of voltage/polarity protection? now would be the time to wire one in.

Dyers RV has a "basic" 50A TRC switch (like my ESCO) for 124 bucks.
RV Transfer Switches, Electrical Accessories, Transfer Switch with Surge Protector
all these "fancy" units do is integrate some type of surge and/or polarity protection

Im not sure it would have saved you in this instance - but I've been several places now where it saved me from reverse polarity and LOW voltage.
The low voltage situations are really bad, causing the ATS to switch on & off....which creates wear on the ATS relay / contact points and will build carbon on the contacts.
I went w/ the LCHW-50 (hardwire) & wired it myself. I kinda wish i had gone w/ the EMS-HW50C, then i could have had a display IN the coach (and in my electrical bay).

A IOTAits 50 R and I don't see them for sale on line either, so you won't find it.
That why I asked to see what everyone is using, because I don't have a clue what is good or the best to use.

Nope no surge or voltage protection, that was on the long list, like the Idea of it being hard wired in too. I have tons of room in the electric bay for one.

I put in the Progressive with the remote display. I really like it. I installed mine under the bed next to the back side of the service panel (circuit breaker load center). I wired mine up there so it protects the voltage coming from the shore power and/or the generator. Most people tell you their not too worried about their generator giving you bad power. I just wanted to watch that, and it worked better for me to wire mine in there. Then I ran the small cable for the display over and mounted the display on the wall next to my night stand. I can just open my eyes and see the display without even moving my head.
For the transfer switch I'm not sure what I've got. Pretty sure it's not an Iota though. I'll try to remember to look next time I get to my rig.

total protection (as bob says) is better, but the generators have voltage / current stabilizing safeguards built in.
its also why i added panel meters so i can monitor the voltage and current (consumption).
if sam goes w/ something like the TRC 40100 he'll get comprehensive surge protection at the ATS too
I'd still add a progressive industries EMS box to prevent pedestal wiring from smoking anything.
