I have a 1995 S10 5speed with a 2.2 but the motor needs some major work. My uncle has a 1995 Sonoma automatic with a 4.3 and his transmission is shot. I want to swap the motor out. With mine being a 5 speed and his being an automatic, will this cause a problem? If it will work do you think the 5-speed transmission can handle that big of a motor. I'm not sure how many different 5speed transmission they made that year. Is it even worth it? Or should I just get the 2.2 fixed?

First thing that comes to mind is you need an auto bell housing, torque converter, flex plate, and motor mounts. There is slight possibility you can reuse the mounts, but I don't know. Then you would probably need the under hood wiring harness along with the ECM. Hopefully everything will match up with what you have. It is doable, but would be a good bit of work.

First, this is a big tractor trailer truck motorhome conversion website, so you won't necessarily get the best info for a question on mini-trucks.

I believe the 5-speed used in your 95 is an integral bellhousing style, and has different bolt pattern than the 4.3. You need a 4.3 pattern (same as Chevy v8) transmission. Earlier models had separate bellhousing, but I am pretty sure your year is integral.

With all the hassles, it would be better to just get a used 2.2 junkyard take-out engine and swap that in place of your junk 2.2.
